Less is More and More is More: Minimalist and Maximalist Interiors

Let's talk about minimalism and maximalism today. Both are very "in" right now in the design world. If anything, it feels like minimalism is on its way out while maximalism is on its way in. However, will either truly be out of style? We think not. We feel torn when it comes to these two very different styles. It's like choosing between birthday cake and birthday pie. You love both, but for completely different reasons.

California Boho Style Airbnb House

Have you suddenly had the itch to hang a basket on your wall? California-inspired bohemian modern decor is coming on strong these days. My family of three traveled west to Summerland, California, near Santa Barbara, earlier this summer and stayed in the MOST lovely Airbnb. It perfectly illustrated the sweet simplicity of California boho style.

This was our first trip with our daughter who was nine months at the time, and we vowed to stay somewhere so pretty that we didn't resent our baby when we had to be in the house at an early bedtime. It is very important not to be mad at your adorable baby while trying to relax on vacation. And look just how lovely our home away from home was!

This is the story of my living room, dining room, and adult life. Dramatic, but true.

Much like religion and politics, a lot of folks start out just doing what their parents do in their homes. Just-bought-my-first-house-Ashley Daly was no different. Gilded things, Country French, brushed bronze, frosted light shades, yellow walls, and bunnies everywhere. A lovely space, but not quite my own.

Blasphemous as it sounds, Ms. Cravitz didn’t have her snooping down just right though. Peering through curtains with binoculars is suspect, but you know what’s not? Sitting on your front porch, having a spiked lemonade and seemingly watching traffic.

I've been lying in bed thinking about this quite a lot over the past year. My life ritual is to swing from one extreme to another, then gently wander my way into middle ground. I did this with boyfriends. I did this with work. I'm doing this with my bedroom decorating, duh. So my once packed bedroom became quite a blank canvas this past year. And it's from this place, I have been contemplating the difference between minimal design and something not quite finished.

Tulsa home styling: A sweet and simple vintage boys' room

We always say our clients are stylish people, but this has never been more the case than when we worked with local blogger and house renovator Emily Netz. Emily and her husband Jeff recently renovated their 1920s Tulsa home (which you can see and read about here) and Emily designed and furnished nearly every space except for her boys' room. When it came to this room, Emily felt stuck on how to create the space she had imagined in her head and wanted an extra pair (or two) of eyes to help bring it to life. We were more than happy to help!

Colorful Vintage + Modern Kitchen Renovation in Tulsa, OK

Well, I can't believe it. Our kitchen is actually done. Done, I say! It's been so long, I'm ashamed for you to look back to see the date of the "before" kitchen post.

Okay. It was April 30th.

So that means the kitchen's been about six months in the making. Now to be completely fair, our kitchen has been functional since mid July, but the "finishing touches" took nearly as long as the bulk of the demo/installation. But whatever. It was our first renovation and we went at it without a general contractor and it's done now, so who cares if it took six months? Who's even counting, right? (I can say that now that it's over, because I did care. I was the crazy woman counting!).
